ship-jumper's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deprived In the Great White North There are so many countries that have people living in poverty and without the bare essentials of life. It is truly sad and heart wrenching seeing this. I guess we call these places “Third World Countries” which has never made sense to me. Does that mean the United States is a 2nd world country or a 1st world country? Which are 1st and 2nd world countries? Are there 4th world countries as well? And forgive me, but even though I wasn’t paying all that much attention in geography classes, I seem to recall there only being ONE world that has so far been proven. No wonder I was so confused in class! Funny thing is however is that I just decided to Google “third world countries” to see what would come up and lo and behold there IS a term ‘fourth world’ and there are specific definitions for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th! Holy! Thanks to diaryland I started writing this entry which then caused me to go and research some tid bits on the great wide web, and poof! I’m a smarter person! Too dang funny: “The First, the Second, and the Third World. That was the first paragraph I read after writing my first paragraph and Googling it online and finding this website. Should you care to go read more of this absurd pecking order, feel free to click and fly through cyberspace! CLICK HERE I’m sure you’ll have a surprise or two. So, the only reason I even started to mention all of this was that certain people in different parts of the world are deprived of certain things. I found out last night that my sweet CK has been deprived of something and it breaks my heart. Our friend we had over for dinner confirmed to me that he too had been deprived of this except when he lived in the States to go to school. The entire country has been deprived of this. It is a SHAME! And here I only thought I just wasn’t looking hard enough in the grocery store aisles. And what is this one thing my sweet wifey-poo has never had? What is this fantastic thing that every kid in America had at least once a week while growing up? What is this delectable feast that I lived on in college and have been craving like a mad woman since moving here? A taste of home. A taste of my childhood. I want it, I want it, I WANT IT AND CAN’T GET IT HERE!!! YUMMY!! Yes indeed, the wonderful gooshy taste of SpaghettiO’s!! They don’t exist up here!! What kind of crap is that? I mean they were originally made by a company called Franco American for pete’s sake. You’d think with a name like that and the huge French influence here that this indeed would be a product in everyone’s kitchen cabinets right next to the Skippy p-nut butter and Kraft Mac and Cheese!! Oh wait, they don't really do Skippy p-nut butter here either. They do KRAFT Peanut Butter. Ugh. Thank GAWD my auntie is going to bring some SpaghettiO's for us when she and mom come to visit next month! I can’t wait to have CK try it!! Oh, and don’t even go there with the Mac and Cheese. Here….that is not what they call it. It’s printed plain and simple on the packaging here as “Kraft Dinner.” Well how boring is that? I swear it must be the Queen’s influence again that they must somehow need to sound more proper and distinguished. I suppose asking someone if they would like Mac and Cheese (which just implies it’s going to be the Kraft stuff in the box) vs. if they would prefer some Kraft Dinner is too ghetto sounding. Who knows? I find that with a lot of products here. Same company same food, but with different packaging and sometimes even a different name. It’s whacked I say! I get lost enough as it is in grocery stores! And let me tell you, Canadian’s think they created Mac and Cheese. Did you know that Canadian’s buy something like 75 MILLION boxes of this stuff a year!! More than any other country!! Check this video out for yourself….and while it is about 6 minutes long…..WATCH IT!! You will pee your pants at the realization that something such as this took up that much air time on a news program!! Ok ok ok. So CK was deprived in her 1st World Country growing up from having SpaghettiO’s but she obviously had MORE than enough “Kraft Dinner.” Given my preferences, I’d say I won out. SpaghettiO’s served over a piece of hot buttered toast definitely rocks over nuclear waste coloured orange starch thingies from a box.
